What is Operation?

Operation
An Operation in ERPNext is a named production step (Cutting, Welding, Painting) with a default workstation, used in Routings and BOMs to define the manufacturing process.

Creating Operations

Go to Manufacturing → Operation → New. Enter the operation name and default workstation. Operations are referenced in Routings and BOM operation tables. The same operation can be used across multiple BOMs, maintaining consistency in process definitions.

Fixed Time vs Variable Time

Operations have two time fields: Scheduled Fixed Time (setup time, constant per order) and Scheduled Duration Per Unit (time per piece). ERPNext calculates total operation time as Fixed Time + (Duration per Unit × Quantity) for accurate scheduling.
