What is Jidoka (Autonomation)?
- Jidoka (Autonomation)
- Jidoka is a Lean manufacturing principle where machines automatically detect defects and stop production, preventing defective goods from moving to the next process step.
Jidoka in Practice
Jidoka (Japanese: "automation with a human touch") means machines are equipped with automatic stop mechanisms triggered by defects. Workers are alerted (via Andon light/alarm) to investigate and fix the root cause before restarting. This builds quality in rather than inspecting it in at the end.
Digital Jidoka with ERP
In ERPNext, Jidoka is implemented through Quality Inspection gates that block document submission if the inspection fails. A failed QC on a Purchase Receipt prevents the stock from being received into the usable warehouse. A failed QC on delivery prevents dispatch. ERPNext logs all failures for Pareto and root cause analysis.
