What is Accounting Period?

Accounting Period
An Accounting Period in ERPNext defines a date range during which transactions can be posted, and locks the books after period close to prevent back-dating.

Setting Up Accounting Periods

Go to Accounting → Accounting Period → New. Define the start and end dates for the period (usually monthly or quarterly). Once closed, ERPNext prevents new or amended entries in that date range, except by users with the "Period Closing Voucher" permission.

Period Closing Voucher

At year-end, create a Period Closing Voucher under Accounting → Period Closing Voucher. This transfers net profit/loss to the Retained Earnings account and opens the next fiscal year, completing the annual close process.
